Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the leading cause of dementia in humans, affecting families across all communities. As our population grows older this poses a significant challenge for future generations, since current therapies do not slow-down the progression of memory loss in dementia patients. A priority area for AD research is therefore to develop new drugs to halt the disease, by finding ways to protect neurons as pathology progresses.
My current interest is in understanding the molecular mechanisms by which the ageing process increases neuronal vulnerability to AD pathology, using Drosophila and human induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC)-derived neuron models of disease. By targeting ageing, a common risk factor for many neurodegenerative diseases, my work aims to deliver potential new targets for the development of broad-spectrum therapies to maintain neuronal integrity in AD and other neurological conditions.
