PhD research: Fernanda Marques received her PhD in 2008 from Minho University where she studied choroid plexus (CP), a brain immune barrier. During that period, she found that CP acts as a sensor of peripheral inflammation. So, she wanted to know what happens to CP when inflammation is coming from the brain, rather than from the periphery. To answer that question, she went to Aloisi's lab at Sapienza University, Italy. There, she studied Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in mice, a model of brain inflammation.
Post-doctoral research: Based on the experience gained from her PhD she decided to deepen her studies on MS. During that stage she started incorporating new techniques and briefly moved to Brazil to learn genomic bioinformatics tools at Brentani's lab, São Paulo University. The results of this and other collaborative project with Dr. Coppola at UCLA University, USA, catalysed several novel findings in MS. Most importantly, she found that lipocalin 2 (LCN2), a protein from her PhD, known to be altered in peripheral inflammation, is also altered in MS mice, a non-peripheral brain inflammation model.
Assistant researcher: In 2013, she successfully acquired funding from the Portuguese Science Foundation (FCT) to study LCN2 and to establish herself as an Assistant researcher. With the addition of several MSc and PhD students, her portfolio has expanded to a wide array of projects focused around two main research themes: (i) role of LCN2 in physiological conditions and (ii) in pathological conditions such as MS and Alzheimer's disease (AD).
Principal Investigator: In 2018, she successfully acquired funding from the Portuguese Science Foundation (FCT) to study Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and to establish a MS Biobank.
Stemming from the hypothesis that perpetuation of brain inflammation by local glia is leading to neurodegeneration even when there is no brain immune cell infiltration from the periphery, it is our aim to:
1)Perform basic translational experiments to answer the question if decreasing glia mediated inflammation is able to influence MS outcomes in a mouse model of disease; 2) Perform clinical translational experiments to answer the question if previous findings from mouse models are also implicated in the human disease. Besides ongoing experiments directed to continue the studies in LCN2, and further extend these studies to other astrocytic and microglia markers, we are now partnering with Braga Hospital, starting a biobank of MS patients.
Along her scientific path she has contributed to 4 book chapters, 72 publications in international peer reviewed journals, have an accumulated IF of 323, 3090 citations and an h-index of 35 (Scopus indicators).
Fernanda Marques already supervised 6 PhD students (currently Post-docs at: Kipnis Lab, Virginia University, USA; Castellano’s Lab, Mount Sinai, USA and International Iberian Nanotechnology Lab, Portugal), and 7 Master students ( the last one is currently a PhD Marie Curie fellow at Valverde’s lab, Universidad Autonoma de Madrid, Spain). Currently she supervises 1 PhD student.
In recognition of her work, she was recently invited as a speaker at the 13th International Congress of Neuroimmunology, the main worldwide meeting in Neuroimmunology field, gathering 667 participants in 2016. Also she was invited to co-edit an issue on brain barriers in Frontiers Cellular Neuroscience and more recently she is a Guest Editor in Frontiers in Cellular Neuroscience Research topic “Not the usual suspects: new insights into damage and repair in the multiple sclerosis brain”. Frontiers in Neuropharmacology. This topic is also being hosted in Frontiers in Cellular Neuroscience (Posted on September 2019).
She is also part of the Editorial board of Frontiers in endocrinology” (2013-present).
Since 2009, Fernanda Marques is an invited Assistant Professor at School of Medicine, lecturing Biochemistry in the curricular unit Organic and Functional Systems and Molecules and Cells, of the medical degree in the University of Minho.
