Bio
Felice Salsano is permanent professor of clinical immunology at the University of Rome “La Sapienza” and head of the Immunology Unit at the Department of Clinical Medicine at the University Hospital. He received the M.D. from Rome University in 1968 where he specialized in hematology and internal medicine. In 1971 he became assistant professor at the same university. In 1973–1974 he was a research fellow at the Institute of Immunology and Rheumatology of Oslo University, where he performed scientific achievements that became standard references in the literature; he clarified some of the basic immune mechanisms related to the specificity of IgM and IgD molecules when co-occurring on the same cells. By using self-made anti-idiotypic antisera he obtained the formal evidence of monoclonality in chronic lymphocytic leukemia. After returning to Italy, he directed his research to clinical problems of lymphoproliferative disorders, obtaining original results in the phenotypic and functional characterization of neoplastic cells. Since 1980, as professor and head of the clinical unit, he mostly managed connective tissue disease patients, focusing on new diagnostic and therapeutic tools for Raynaud's phenomenon and Systemic Sclerosis.
