During my Ph. D. preparation (Université de Lorraine, Nancy, France), I studied the structure-function of Methionine Sulfoxyde Reductases using macromolecular crystallography and in collaboration with an enzymology laboratory. I contributed to the understanding of the functionality of these anti-oxydant enzymes (Ranaivoson et al.J. mol. biol. (2006, 2008 and 2009)). Then, during a first post-doctoral work in the Dr. Marcel Knossow’s group at the “Laboratoire d’Enzymologie et Biochimie Structurales” (CNRS, France), I conducted the preparation, the biochemical characterization, and the crystallographic study of tubulin complexes, including complexes between tubulin and the microtubule-depolymerising kinesin 13s. One of my projects consisted in the structural analysis of the binding mode of a class of anti-cancer drugs on tubulin (Ranaivoson et al., Acta cryst. D (2012)). I joined the Dr Comoletti’s Lab at the “Child Health Institute of New Jersey” (RWJMS, Rutgers University, NJ, USA) to study synaptic adhesion proteins using structural and biophysical techniques. I had the opportunity to overcome new challenges, as I learned how to manipulate eukaryotic extra-cellular proteins, isolated or in complex, using a mammalian expression system. Several publications relate my work and contributions at CHINJ (Vieth et al., Nature Immunology (2017); Jackson et al, Nature Comm. (2016); Ranaivoson et al., Front. Cell Neurosci (2016); Rubio-Marrero et al., (2016); Ranaivoson et al., Structure (2015)). Then, I joined Dr Anne Houdusse's Lab at the Institut Curie (Paris, France), where I'm in charge of conducting research on specific kinesins, and their involvement in cancer. We obviously study the structure of those kinesins, to decipher structure-activity relationships with potential anti-cancer drugs, but in addition, in collaboration with other teams, we investigate their specific molecular mechanism (for example by single molecule studies), in particular during cell division.
