Frederik Van der Veken moved into the field of accelerator physics as a Marie Curie COFUND fellow in the Accelerator and Beam Physics Group at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland and was a Project Associate with the University of Malta, Msida, Malta. In 2021 he became a staff member in the same group where his current research is mainly focused on nonlinear beam dynamics and collimation commissioning and optimisation. He earned his Ph.D. degree in 2014 in theoretical particle physics at the University of Antwerp, Belgium on the mathematical properties of Wilson Lines in quantum chromodynamics.
