I did my undergraduate degree of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the Universidade Santiago de Compostela and my PhD studies at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. My thesis was about how fluoroquinolones inhibit the DNA topoisomerases activity relaxing DNA and the release of concatemers of DNA. Once I have got my PhD degree I moved to Ann Arbor (Michigan) for a postdoctoral stage of five years. I have studied how the Legionella pneumophila outer membrane can block macrophage activity. Back in Spain, I worked at the INIBIC in La Coruña as postdoctoral researcher. I found that Acinetobacter baumannii released membrane vesicles with DNA plasmids. Surprisingly, these vesicles functioned as vehicles for horizontal cross-species transformation of virulent plasmids. Likewise, we described how a porin of this bacterium activated autophagy in human cells. Then, I have decided to move to Ecuador under the Prometheus Program to investigate antibiotic-resistant bacteria in this country. Since 2015, I have been professor at the Medical School of Universidad de las Américas in Quito and, since august of 2022, at the Universidad Espíritu Santo of Guayaquil as a professor of microbiology, cell biology and biochemistry.
