Prof. Erika Scavetta is associate professor of Analytical Chemistry at the Department of Industrial Chemistry ‘Toso Montanari’ of the University of Bologna (ITALY). She graduated in Industrial Chemistry summa cum laude at the Bologna University in 1999. From January 2000 to October 2003 she accomplished her PhD studies in Chemical Sciences at the Bologna University, studying the development of electrochemical sensors and the characterisation of functional materials with electrochemical and structural techniques.
In the years 2000 and 2001 she was coordinator of two projects (section ‘young researcher’), the first financed by Bologna University and the second entitled ‘Electrochemical Sensors for food control’, financed by CNR.
From 1st January 2003 to April 2005 she had a post-doc fellowship at the Department of Physical and Inoganic Chemistry of Bologna University still working on electroanalytical techniques, development of electrochemical sensors and biosensors.
In 2004 she received the "Best Young Researcher" Award from the Analytical Chemistry Division of the Italian Chemical Society.
She has a permanent position, at the Bologna University, from 17 April 2005 as assistant professor, and from December 2014 as associate professor of Analytical Chemistry.
She teaches courses of Analytical Chemistry and Industrial Analytical Chemistry in the 1st and 2nd level degree course in Industrial Chemistry.
The main research activities are the development and the characterisation of electrodes modified with inorganic functional materials and with conducting polymers and the application of the developed devices in the field of electrochemical sensors.
She is skilled in the characterisation of coatings and modified surfaces with electrochemical techniques both conventional (e.g. Cyclic Voltammetry or Impedance Spectroscopy) and innovative such as SECM (Scanning ElectroChemical Microscope) or Electrochemical Quartz Crystal Microbilance.
Others research interests are the development of amperometric biosensors for glucose detection in biological matrices or in food samples and the synthesis and characterisation of metal nanoparticles.
She is currently involved in the project PRIN 2010-11 "MIND -Engineering physiologically and pathologically relevant Models for the Investigations of Age-related Diseases".
She collaborates since five years with the group of Professor Claude Foranò in the framework of a Galileo Project concerning the electrodeposition of synthetic hydrotalcites and with the Department of Chemistry, University of Antwerp, Antwerpen BELGIUM (Professor K. Jannsens), on projects devoted to the structural characterisation of industrial catalysts with XRF and XAS.
The scientific production is documented by 68 papers on international journals, 1 word patent in collaboration with AIR LIQUIDE and more than 50 contributions presented at national and international conferences. She serves as Referee for more than 10 high impact journals such as: Chemistry of Materials, Electrochimica Acta, Journal of Electroanalytical Chemistry, Electrochemistry Communications.
