My research uses bioinformatics and systems biology to investigate how gene regulatory networks coordinate cell fate transitions during development. During her PhD I evaluated the range of molecular states that contribute to the functional phenotypes of self-renewal and pluripotency that stem cells display, publishing evidence that stem cell phenotype is specified by genes operating in the context of a network, and this network maintains the balance between assuring essential functions and buffering environmental change or perturbation. As a postdoctoral researcher I am extending this work by mapping the most common paths of lymphatic development, and the degree of constraint on these paths that are necessary for normal function.
I began my career in the USA working as a lab manager for Greg Gibson at Georgia Tech, using transcriptome profiling to understand more about the genetic basis of complex traits and disease susceptibility, in large scale predictive health studies. I returned to Australia to complete a cross-disciplinary PhD with Christine Wells and Martin Pera at the University of Queensland and University of Melbourne, applying a combination of bulk and single cell approaches to characterize the transcriptional and phenotypic variability of human stem cells and the pre-implantation embryo. This work was awarded the Donald Tugby Prize for Nanotechnology and the Future of Science by the University of Queensland, and published in leading journals including Nature Communications, Stem Cell Reports and Development. Since 2019 I have been the computational lead in Ben Hogan’s lab in the Program for Organogenesis and Cancer at the Peter Mac, supervising staff and students between the wet and dry labs. While I oversees a variety of projects, her research is mainly focused on understanding how the key transcription factor Prox1 controls lymphatic endothelial cell differentiation during normal development, and metastatic cancer progression.
