Bio
Elaine Y. Wan investigates disease models of heart failure and arrhythmias, such as atrial fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia using molecular biology, cellular physiology, optical mapping, and in vivo techniques, such as implantable telemetry. Her clinical and basic science research and publications are translational and are focused in the areas of atrial and ventricular arrhythmias. She is a board certified attending in cardiac electrophysiology at Columbia University Medical Center, with over five years of clinical experience. As a Physician–Scientist, her scientific research in basic cellular electrophysiology along with clinical expertise in cardiac electrophysiology and cardiac physiology allows to translate her work from bench to bedside. With funding from NIH K08 and institutional grants, she led her own independent laboratory for four years and assembled a novel 3D panoramic optical mapping set up to image murine hearts with atrial and ventricular cardiac arrhythmias. The proposed study extends on her first author publication in the Journal of Clinical Investigation since 2016, and her senior author publication, recently published in JCI Insight, uses optical mapping to understand the molecular mechanisms that cause arrhythmias. She is dedicated in developing translational therapeutics for patients with cardiac disease with atrial and ventricular arrhythmias, which are clinically relevant cardiac diseases that cause increased mortality and morbidity.
