Edward N. Nxumalo

Professor Edward Nxumalo is a Professor in the Institute of Nanotechnology and Water Sustainability (iNanoWS) in the University of South Africa (UNISA) working largely under the Membrane Science and Technology thematic area. He previously worked as a Senior Lecturer and Researcher in the University of Johannesburg (UJ) and has led various groups in different periods. As an NRF rated researcher, he has authored and co-authored over 75 peer-reviewed scientific journal papers including book chapters and conference proceedings. He is a speaker of note for various top international, government, community, and scientific meetings. He has mentored staff members and supervised a wide range of M and D students and postdoctoral fellows in the fields of nanotechnology, water science and membrane science and technology at UNISA and other institutions of higher learning. He leads research nanotechnology, nanostructured membranes, mainly fabrication, analysis, advanced characterization, and application in various fields including energy, water treatment, desalination and ultra-, and nano-filtration. He also focuses on the synthesis and advanced characterization of heteroatomic nanomaterials for diverse applications and the catalytic application of a wide range of nanomaterials for use in membrane processes. Prof Nxumalo currently leads the South African Nanotechnology Initiative (SANi) the only nanotechnology association in the country and the largest in Africa as its incumbent President and Chair of Board. SANi is a government-mandated organization under the Department of Science and Innovation that acts as a steward for nanotechnologies in SA. He seats on Boards for various organizations including the African Membrane Society, SANi and Sabinano and is a member of scientific bodies and panel committees in the country and the region.
