Her extended research in the criminal court records of early modern Rome has uncovered many ways that scholars’ gendered expectations do not neatly fit the lives and words of ordinary urban women. Her many articles explore such themes as work, family, sexuality, prostitution, street rituals, justice, crime, self-representation, oralities, and the social history of art, in particular the personal life of the painter, Artemisia Gentileschi.
