Dr Boyle is the Director of the Research Information Technology Unit (R2). Since 2006 Dr Boyle has been researching, developing and implementing systems for the ethical acquisition of record-linkable data for audit, research and health surveillance.
Consent management, security and privacy-protecting record linkage are key components and research areas. The software systems (GRHANITETM) are now responsible for the largest collections of record-linkable primary care data ever accumulated in Australia. Prior to emigrating from Scotland in 2006, Dr Boyle worked in a similar capacity to develop and implement technologies for wide-scale data acquisition. His system SCI-DC Network is internationally recognised and is playing a continuing key role in the support of population-based diabetes health service provision across Scotland. Contribution to Research: • Access to primary care data in a systematic, record-linkable manner has been almost impossible in Australia. CI Boyle’s contribution to research is as an enabler of research by providing access to such data for the first time ever. With increasing access to primary care data, research in this field is predicted to advance markedly in the coming years. This shall provide evidence and techniques to support effective primary and secondary prevention strategies, decrease hospital admission rates, improve health outcomes and decreased healthcare costs. • GRHANITETM and research utilizing GRHANITETM is providing evidence to support changing strategies for Sexually Transmitted Infection strategies and health surveillance. • GRHANITETM is utilized in the Human Variome Australia Node project and is linking Phenotypic data to Genotypic data for international research • GRHANITETM is utilized by BioGrid Australia and supports numerous record linkage research projects in Australia. Collaborations: • Collaborator and AI on the Mothers After Gestational Diabetes in Australia (MAGDA) NHMRC Partnership Project, Deakin, Flinders, Melbourne Universities. DoH Victoria, SA Health, Diabetes Australia, Diabetes SA, Diabetes Victoria. • Collaborator on the Australian Collaboration for Coordinated Enhanced Sentinel Surveillance of STI’s and BBV’s with funding support via the Commonwealth Department of Health, NSW Health, DoH Victoria and the Northern Territory Department of Health and ACT Health. • Technology provider and consultant to NPS MedicineWise • Further collaboration in research projects with the Burnet Institute, The Kirby Institute UNSW, UNSW Primary Health Care Unit, The University of Adelaide, La Trobe University and The University of Melbourne, Population Health.
