Research interests: thoracic surgery
Dr. Waller has been a Consultant Thoracic Surgeon and Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University Hospital of Leicester for 20 years and has move to Barts Hospital in London this year to lead their mesothelioma and emphysema services. He has a specialist interest in mesothelioma having published over 60 peer reviewed articles and chapters and been a lead participant in 3 randomized surgical trials: MesoVATS, MARS and MARS2. He has promoted the wide application of extended pleurectomy/decortication as the surgical option of choice. He has also been Chair of the National Cancer Research Institute Mesothelioma group in UK and IMIG Conference President in 2016. He is a Councillor of the European Society of Thoracic Surgeons for whom he has also organized the Postgraduate Course and a committee member of the British Thoracic Oncology Group. Dr. Waller has served on the Executive Committee of the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery in Great Britain, the Specialist Advisory Committee for Training and has worked with NHS England as Clinical Lead for commissioning of volume reduction for emphysema. In the field of lung cancer surgery he was amongst the pioneers of VATS lobectomy in UK over 20 years ago and has published on its application to increase the resection rate. He was also first author of the surgical paper from the Big Lung Trial of the use of adjuvant chemotherapy in UK. He continues to train in new techniques of navigational bronchoscopy and robot assisted thoracic surgery.
