I hold a Ph. D in Atmospheric Science (2000; Ph. Dissertation extraordinary award) from University of Granada (Spain) and B.S. in Applied Physics from the same University (1994). Since 1999 I am on the Faculty of the Department of Physics of the University of Jaen, where I am responsible for courses on meteorology and renewable energy resources and leads the Solar Radiation and Atmosphere Modeling (MATRAS) research group. I got a permanent appointment (Associated Professor) in 2003 and are full Professor since September 2018. Since 2018 I belong to IISTA (https://www.iista.es/), a mixed research center of the Universities of Granada, Jaén and Córdoba dedicated to research on the Earth system. I actively collaborate with various IISTA members in the field of the atmospheric modeling. Over the last 10 years my research interest has focused mainly on integration studies of solar and wind energy. In particular, my effort has been directed to two main fields. First, the evaluation of solar and wind energy resources, including their spatial and temporal balance at different spatial and temporal scales. The main objective of this research is the design of a technically and economically efficient energy system with a high proportion of renewable energies. This is the focus of the national project that I currently lead. Second, the improvement of solar radiation prediction techniques at different spatial scales (plant, regional, utility scale,..) and forecasting lead times (from minutes to hours and days). The main objective of this research is to improve the integration of the solar energy in the power grid, particularly in power systems with a high proportion of renewable energies. Within these research fields I have led (as Principal Investigator) 12 privately financed contracts, 2 projects financed by the Junta de Andalucía and 4 projects of the National Research Plan of Spain. I have authored over 70 referred publications (JCR) and about 200 conference papers and technical reports. I have an H-index of 29 in the web of science (43 in scholar google) and about 2700 cites, (6280 in scholar google). I have 4 “sexenios” and 5 “quinquenios”, along with 5 “tramos” of the Junta de Andalucía. I have supervised 8 Ph. students and 25 Master students. I have been visiting scientist at the University of East Anglia, the European Center for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (both in the U.K.). I addition I was visiting scientist the National Center for Atmospheric Research (Boulder, CO, USA), financed by a Fulbright-Salvador de Madariaga scholarship. During the period 2012-2014, I was vice-chair of the Working Group 1 (solar power forecast) and the Spanish representative of the COST action ES1002 on “Weather Intelligence for Renewable Energies (WIRE) (http://www.wire1002.ch/)”. I am an active member of the the International Energy Agency Task 16 Solar resource for high penetration and large scale applications (http://iea-pvps.org/index.php?id=389). Since 2015, I am part of the Steering Committee of the “International Conference of Energy Meteorology”. I have served many times as reviewer for the Spanish National Research Agency. In 2010, in collaboration with some colleagues and the University of Jaén, I founded a private “spin-off” company.
