Daniel Renner received the B.Eng. degree in electrical engineering
from the University of Chile, Santiago, Chile, in 1976, and the Ph.D. degree in optoelectronics from Cambridge
University, Cambridge, U.K., in 1981.
He is the Vice-President of business development at Freedom Photonics, Santa Barbara, CA, USA, responsible for the
identification of new business areas, while also supporting product manufacturing and engineering with his vast
expertise in the photonic component area. He has 30 years of experience in the development, manufacturing, and
commercialization of complex photonic devices and systems. His experience spans both the technical and the
commercialization aspects of photonic products, having led activities in many areas, including technology and product
development, identification of new business areas, introduction of new products, marketing, and sales. Prior to
joining Freedom Photonics, he held positions of increasing technical and business responsibility at Standard
Telecommunication Laboratories, Rockwell International, Ortel Corporation, Agility Communications, and Aerius
Photonics/FLIR EOC. At these companies, he led teams that developed a wide range of commercially successful
photonic products such as semiconductor lasers for high-speed transmission, the first commercial CATV fiber-optic
transmitters, analog fiber-optic links for antenna remoting, tunable semiconductor laser transmitters, and high-power
VCSEL arrays.
