Career Trajectory
Bio
I am a physician scientist conducting research to identify diverse and unexpected intracellular factors and pathways that regulate hematopoiesis and elucidate the molecular mechanism(s) of their function. The goals of my research are broadly to uncover novel biology that will lead to improved treatments for patients with benign and malignant hematopoietic disorders. My scientific and medical training have provided me with an excellent background in multiple disciplines including biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, pharmacology, and hematopathology. I conducted research with a number of investigators during my undergraduate studies, initially working under Dr. Pin-Lan Li to study the effects of calcium on the activity of the sarcoplasmic reticulum of vascular smooth muscle cells. During this period, I contributed to a resulting publication which characterized the roles of NAD(P)H oxidase on the sarcoplasmic reticulum of coronary artery smooth muscle cells. I later transitioned to the organic chemistry laboratory of Dr. Judith Burstyn where I synthesized phenanthroline derivative compounds that were utilized to produce a reporter molecule capable of detecting airborne ethylene. Finally, I wrote my undergraduate research thesis in the laboratory of Dr. Yevgenya Grinblat where I used zebrafish models to study the role of Zic family of zinc transcription factors in neural development. The summer after graduation I completed a paid internship at Invitrogen corporation where I worked in the Assay Development Division optimizing a FRET-based assay to detect post-translational histone modifications. During my completion of the Medical Scientist Training Program at the University of Virginia, I conducted my predoctoral research with Dr. Todd Stukenberg identifying undiscovered pathways that regulated cell cycle control during mitosis. A resulting first author publication demonstrated the critical and highly conserved role for Centromere Protein I (CENP-I) in the spindle assembly checkpoint (SAC). A subsequent first author publication showed the mechanism of CENP-I’s SAC activity, demonstrating that it cooperates with the kinase Aurora B to localize key checkpoint proteins to kinetochores. During my final year of pre-doctoral training, I earned both the Outstanding Graduate Student award within my department, as well as the Michael J. Peach Outstanding Graduate Student award across all the biological sciences at my university.
I have completed a residency in anatomic pathology and a clinical fellowship in hematopathology. During this period, I became proficient in recognizing and diagnosing disorders of the hematopoietic system. For my postdoctoral training, I built on my prior biochemistry expertise to elucidate diverse and unexpected factors and pathways that regulate benign and malignant hematopoiesis. My sponsor Dr. Emery Bresnick was an internationally recognized leader in the field of hematopoiesis and has an extensive record of training postdoctoral fellows. I am currently a tenure track Assistant Professor in the UW-Madison Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and also practice general hematopathology at the University of Wisconsin Hospitals and Clinics for 8 weeks a year. I have the expertise, training, and motivation to complete the proposed studies and the clinical acumen to pursue translation of the results from the bench to the bedside.
