Dan Faircloth was born in Cambridge, U.K., in 1974. He received the B.Eng. degree (Hons.) in electrical and electronic engineering, the M.Sc. degree in electrical power engineering, and the Ph.D. degree in high-voltage electrical engineering from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology, Manchester, U.K., in 1995, 1996, and 2000, respectively.
In 1999, he joined the National Grid Research Laboratory, Surrey, U.K., where he ran research projects into online condition monitoring, intelligent data analysis, and explosive failure of porcelain clad bushings. In 2002, he joined the ISIS Neutron Source, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Harwell, U.K., where he was involved in caesiated high-current negative Penning ion source development. From 2004 to 2014, he was an Ion Source Section Leader. He delivered ion sources for Chinese Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), CERN, and ESS Bilbao. He was responsible for the electromagnetic design of nine different families of beam line magnets for the ISIS Second Target Station. He became a Chartered Electrical Engineer in 2005. He has consulted for Rapiscan and ASML and project managed the development of a novel tandem accelerator for Siemens. He has collaborated with CERN; Fermilab, Batavia, IL, USA, SNS Oak Ridge, Oak Ridge, TN, USA, the Los Alamos National Laboratory, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, IPP Garching, Garching bei München, Germany, and many universities all over the world. He teaches at the CERN Accelerator School, the Cockcroft Institute, and the John Adam Institute. He founded the Particle Accelerator Engineering Network, a professional organization for people working in the field of particle accelerators. In 2018, this network formally became an IET Technical Professional Network that he chairs now. In 2014, he formed the Low Energy Beams Group, ISIS Neutron and Muon Source, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. This group delivers beam for ISIS 24/7 operations, operates four accelerator test stands, and has extensive expertise in high-voltage engineering, RF, vacuum, modeling, large-scale simulations, accelerator technology, and plasma physics.
Dr. Faircloth is a member of the Institute of Engineering and Technology and IoP. He organized and chaired NIBS2016, Oxford, U.K., and edited the peer-reviewed proceedings. He is on the scientific program committees of IPAC, ICIS, and NIBS.
