Costas Georgakopoulos

Costas Georgakopoulos was born in Athens, Greece. He finished bachelor studies in 1987 and PhD studies in 1992 in chemical engineering at the National Technical University of Athens, Greece. He is former discus thrower, national record holder in the period 1983-2002, national record holder under-23 since 1983 and juniors since 1982, he possessed the world best junior discus performance of the year 1982, he was 3rd winner of the Universiade 1987, 1st winner of the Mediterranean Games of 1983, ranked 10th in the 1984 Olympic Games, Los Angeles, USA. He joined the Doping Control Laboratory of Athens in 1988 and he served as Laboratory Director the period 1996-2011. The Doping Control Laboratory of Athens was IOC accredited since 1990, WADA accredited since 2004, national horse racing laboratory since 1998 and ISO accredited since 2000. He was the organizer and director of the Athens 2004 Olympic Games Antidoping Laboratory. Athens Laboratory performance in the Athens 2004 Olympic Games was voted by the worldwide journalists of the Associated Press as the 5th most important sport event of 2004. Since 2007, he is ISO/IEC 17025 assessor. Since October 2011, he is the Doping Analysis Lab Director of the Antidoping Lab Qatar. He is coordinator or partner of 19 research projects funded by European Union, Greek and Qatari national funds, IOC and WADA. He is the scientific supervisor of 30 Master, 8 PhD and one postdoc studies. He is author of 60 peer reviewed scientific articles dedicated to applications of analytical information processing, mass spectrometry and antidoping analysis. He was World Association of Antidoping Scientists-WAADS’ President the years 2008 and 2009.
