I am a researcher at the National Council of Scientific and Technical Research Argentina (CONICET, Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas) and head of practical work in the Department of Cellular and Molecular Biology, School of Biochemistry and Biological Sciences at the Universidad Nacional del Litoral (UNL) (Santa Fe, Argentina).
My bachelor´s degree is in Biotechnology. Later, I realized a PhD in Argentina in plant molecular biology, studying different protein factors involved in the cytochrome c oxidase assembly and the molecular mechanisms developmental for plants to solve the biotic and abiotic stress connected with this process. I worked with Arabidopsis thaliana and tobacco plants as study models.
Afterwards, I realized a post-doc stage in Argentina designing expression vectors to express recombinant proteins in animal cell culture. Then I joined CONICET as a researcher and worked on the production of biotherapeutics in animal cells, although I also initially used E. coli as a host for the expression of antibody fragments. It was an opportunity to know and learn about the pharmaceutical world; and both upstream and downstream production of these types of molecules since that lab works with a pharmaceutical company. In particular, I worked on antibody engineering and the expression in different types of mammalian cells. The aim of the anti-IFn-α2b antibodies production was their therapeutic use in autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus. During this time, I had the opportunity to know different types of treatment for these diseases and the side effects of the therapeutics.
At the same time, I began to study medicinal plants from Argentina and knew different movements of Latin-American health based on plants. Then, I decided a change because I have a different conception of biotherapeutics. I think that the pharmaceutical products generated in culture cells are only pharmaceutical products, but biotherapeutics are natural molecules that can help people in a sustainable and accessible way.
At this moment, I work on the improvement of plants of agronomic interest using CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing techniques.
