My academic training and research experience have provided me with a background in multiple biological disciplines including Pharmacology, Immunology, Immunometabolism, Tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs), and Cancer immunology. In my PhD, I conducted research with Prof. Ronaldo Ribeiro and Prof. Fernando Cunha on the immune effects of classical anticancer drugs. I explored the innate mechanism of TAMs functional reprogramming. I was the first author of the initial description that the chemotherapy with Paclitaxel induces the activation of TAMs (Wanderley et al. Cancer Research, 2018). A subsequent first-author publication demonstrated that the blockage of the PD-L1/PD-1 axis in combination with paclitaxel increased mechanical allodynia, chronic neuropathy development, and local inflammation (Wanderley et al. Cancer Immunology Research, 2022). Additionally, during the COVID-19 pandemic, I participated directly in research that resulted in the identification of the NET release mechanism involved in lung injuries caused by COVID-19 (Silva, Wanderley et al., Critical Care, 2022). During my undergraduate and graduate careers, I received several academic and teaching awards. For my postdoctoral training, I will continue to build on my previous training in pharmacology and cancer immunology which will allow me to address additional questions regarding the mechanism of resistance to chemo- and immuno-therapy in cancer.
