The growing concern regarding the gradual depletion of fossil oil reservoirs and the awareness of climate change has stimulated recent research activities for the utilization of renewable biomass resources for the sustainable production of fuels and chemicals. From the industrial and economic points of view, bioindustry still needs robust routes to transform biomass directly into valuable final products, simultaneously satisfying industrial, economic and environmental demands.
