Brian Stephen Eley is a qualified paediatrician and registered as a paediatric infectious diseases sub-specialist with the Health Professions Council of South Africa. He has been the head of Infectious Diseases at Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital (RCWMCH) in Cape Town, since 2003, The head of Clinical Immunology at RCWMCH since 2008, and a full professor in the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health, University of Cape Town since 2015. He is the director of the Paediatric Infectious Diseases training unit at the University of Cape Town since 2003 and in this capacity trained the first three paediatric ID sub-specialists in South Africa, and to date has successfully trained 15 paediatric ID sub-specialists.
He has a strong interest in paediatric infectious diseases, clinical immunology and primary immunodeficiency diseases research, is a co-author of 198 peer-review journal publications and 36 book chapters, has an H-index of 53, has accumulated 8610 citations (Google Scholar, 9 August 2022) and successfully supervised or co-supervised 31 masters dissertations (10 with distinction) and 3 doctoral theses. His current research interests include the outcomes of HIV-infected children treated with antiretroviral therapy, new diagnostics for childhood tuberculosis, bloodstream infection in children, rare vaccine adverse events in children and inborn errors of immunity causing susceptibility to infection in children.
He has served as a member of the data safety monitoring boards of several clinical trials including NEVEREST II (2005-2009), NEVEREST III (2010-2015), a Rifibutin safety & pharmacokinetic study (2010-2013), PRINCE 1 phase 3b trial (2010-2014), PRINCE 2 phase 3b trial (2011-2015), MVA85A Phase II Randomised Controlled Trial to Evaluate Safety and Immunogenicity (2011-2013), a phase IB randomized, double-blind, dose escalation clinical trial of the safety, reactogenicity and immunogenicity of MTBVAC compared to BCG SSI in newborns living in a tuberculosis endemic region with a safety arm in adults [MTBVAC Phase IB trial] (2015-2018) and a phase 2a randomised, controlled, dose-defining trail of the safety and immunogenicicty of MTBVAC in healthy, BCG naïve, HIV unexposed, South African newborns (2018-2021).
He has served on the World Health Organization Technical Reference Group on Pediatric HIV Care & Treatment, the Education Committee of the World Society for Pediatric Infectious Diseases, the Board of the African Society for Immunodeficiencies, the Board of the African Society for Children Affected by HIV/AIDS, is a past chair of the Child and Adolescent Committee of the Southern African HIV Clinicians Society, contributes to national and provincial infectious diseases policies, and the development of public sector services for children at RCWMCH and in the Western Cape province.
He currently serves as a member of the Board of the World Society for Pediatric Infectious Diseases, a member of the Executive Committee of the African Society for Paediatric Infectious Diseases, a member of the Primary Immunodeficiency Diseases Committee of the World Allergy Organization, a member of the editorial board of Pediatric Drugs, an editorial member of Current Pediatric Reports, and the editor of the AfSPID Bulletin (journal of the African Society for Paediatric Infectious Diseases).
