As leader of the Hybrid Wheat Program, Bhoja Basnet fosters the development of more efficient and sustainable hybrid wheat technology by exploring potential heterotic pools within CIMMYT’s spring wheat germplasm and developing Cytoplasmic Male Sterility (CMS) based hybrid breeding and production systems.
The Hybrid Wheat Program collaborates with a number of public and private sector partners working in hybrid wheat technology and seed businesses. Major program activities involve production and testing of several hybrid combinations of wheat using gametocide and CMA systems, understanding the genetic basis of heterosis and developing male and female breeding pools through conventional and genomic approaches.
