Benjamin Shapiro (benshap@umd.edu) received a B.S. in aerospace engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology and a Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology where he worked on symmetry breaking in jet engines. He joined the University of Maryland Department of Aerospace Engineering in 2000. His interests have shifted to control of miniaturized systems, with a focus on systems for biomedical applications. In 2009, he spent his sabbatical at NIH and NIST, half time within the Advanced Technology Center at the National Cancer Institute, the other half at the Center for Nanoscale Science and Technology at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. He is currently an associate professor in the Fischell Department of Bioengineering and the Institute for Systems Research at the University of Maryland.
