Boris D. Zaitsev (SM'05) was born in Saratov, Russia, on March 26, 1949. He graduated from Saratov State University in 1971 and received the master's degree in radio physics. In 1978, he received the degree of Candidate of Sciences in physics-mathematics (Ph.D. equivalent) from Saratov State University. In 1998, he received the Doctor of Science diploma. From 1971 to 1981, he was working at the Institute of Mechanics and Physics of Saratov State University as an Engineer and (since 1975) as Senior Research Scientist. Since 1981, he has been working at the Institute of Radio Engineering and Electronics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Saratov Branch, as Senior Research Scientist (from 1981 to 1986), Leading Research Scientist (from 1986 to 2001), and Principal Research Scientist (since 2001). He is a head of the Laboratory of Physical Acoustics in the Institute of Radio Engineering and Electronics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Saratov Branch. From 1987 to 1996, he worked at the Saratov State University as a part-time Associate Professor and as part-time Professor (since 1999). From 1996 to 2002, he worked at Marquette University as Visiting Research Scientist. Currently, he deals with the investigation of bulk, surface, and plate acoustic waves propagating in piezoelectric materials and the development of various devices and sensors based on this. He is engaged in the investigation of propagation of acoustic waves in conducting and viscous liquids and polymers, and measurment of their acoustic parameters. His scientific interests include the development of acoustic principles for measuring the parameters of single short and powerful generated microwave radio-wave pulses. He is also engaged in the theoretical and experimental studies of the influence of electric and magnetic fields on acoustic waves propagating in nonlinear crystals. He has also significant experience in theoretical and experimental investigation of high-frequency electromagnetic and acoustic waves (1 to 40 GHz) and vacuum deposition of thin films. Prof. Zaitsev has more than 250 publications in Russia and abroad.
