Research Interest:
Our laboratory brings a pioneering approach of fusion of infection biology and regeneration biology, stem cell biology and aging themes to dissect fundamental mechanisms underpinning adult tissue regeneration, rejuvenation and organ growth by studying how intracellular bacterial pathogens that strictly depend on host cellular and metabolic functions for their survival and replication have evolved to hijack adult tissue cell plasticity and endogenous tissue regeneration pathways and subvert the aging process. Build on our recent discoveries that certain bacterial pathogens not only epigenetically reprogram lineage-committed adult tissue cells to stem cell state but also directly target and mobilize adult stem cell niches for generating new tissues and organ growth in in vitro, ex-vivo and living animal models as well as patients, we use evolutionary refined bacterial strategies as natural tool kits to identify endogenous pathways that effectively regenerate adult tissues and organs and to manipulate the aging process. We anticipate that these new directions will lead to novel concept development in infection biology and regeneration biology, which we hope to translate to therapeutic strategies for combating bacterial infections and antibiotic resistance on the one hand and on the other to regenerate diseased tissues and rejuvenate aging tissues. By exploiting this thematic intersection of the biology of bacterial-induced partial host cell reprogramming with regeneration and stem cell biology, we are also developing new therapeutic strategies to reprogram metastatic cancers towards less aggressive behaviour to patient survival.
