I use psychophysical, theoretical, computational, brain imaging and neurophysiological techniques tounderstand how sensory and otor processes in the primate brain work and how they interact. Iinvestigate this research question both in low- and high-level perception.At thc high levcl, I investigatc, the ncuronal and cognitive mechanisms of action perccption andproduction in both the human and monkey models starting at the single-unit level and up to thecognitive level. In the monkey model, I used neurophysiological recordings from motor areas to assessthat mirror neurons, one of the neuronal substrates of action perception and production, have several.previously unknown, tuning properties. I confirmed these findings in the human model by means of behavioral, functionalmagnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). electro-encephalography (EEG) and transcranial magneticstimulation experiments.I also contributed to stablishing novel high-density recording techniques and I proposed new theoretical methods to assess causal interactions between neuronalresponses.
