Our research is located at the interface of inflammation, cancer, lipid metabolism and lipid signaling and aims to elucidate the molecular mechanisms of natural products with particular focus on plant ingredients. We apply (bio)analytical, biochemical and molecular pharmacological techniques to discover innovative drug targets and to develop phytopharmaceuticals and biogenic lead structures. Moreover, we use natural products to investigate the physiological function of their targets in cellular processes related to chronic inflammation and programmed cell death. Key for our interdisciplinary research is a powerful chromatographic and mass spectrometric bioanalytics of lipids (i.e., targeted lipidomics), which allows us to unravel the widely unexplored interrelations between lipid metabolism, signal transduction and homeostasis.
