My research at the Institute for Medical Research is based on the possibility to obtain the added-value products from slaughterhouse blood that could solve the problem of meat industry waste disposal and enhance its cost-effectiveness. So far, we have successfully performed the incapsulation of dexamethasone sodium phosphate and diclofenac sodium into empty erythrocyte membranes (i.e.”ghosts”) from slaughterhouse porcine and bovine blood in controlled hemolysis process, thus showing that erythrocytes’ ghosts can be used as system for prolonged drug release. On the other hand, we managed to transform hemoglobin obtained in the same process, into the solid state form by adding maltose and heath-drying at 37°C. This product has potential to be used as a source of hem iron in prevention and treatment of anemia in both humans and domestic animals. My PhD thesis is focused on testing whether the hemoglobin isolated from slaughterhouse blood retains its biological activity (immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant…) by investigating the influence of this protein on the different cells (primary cell cultures and cell lines).
