Alexandre Alonso-Fernandez

I carried out my PhD (defense in 2011) in the Ecology and Marine Resources group (ERM), at the IIM-CSIC, studying the bioenergetics of reproduction and its impact on the reproductive potential for exploited fish stocks. After the PhD I decided to move into a new research line focussed in the assessment and management of small scale fisheries. During the period 2017 – 2019, I leaded, as Principal Investigator (PI), two research projects (funded by the ICES Science Fund and the Xunta de Galicia) in collaboration with the regional government analysing the fishery dependent data of the monitoring programme of the artisanal fleet of Galicia, run by the Consellería do Mar. I am officially a member of the recently formed Rede entre o sector pesqueiro e organismos cientificos de Galicia (REDEMAR), leaded by the Xunta de Galicia. REDEMAR is network created to promote the collaboration between the fishing sector and scientific institutions. More recently (2019 – present), I have included a new research line to my scientific portfolio: spatial ecology, the study of movement and behaviour to inform assessment and management of marine organism. I am the institutional responsible for the management of the largest fixed underwater acoustic telemetry network in the Spanish Atlantic coast, installed in the coast of Galicia and part of the European Tracking Network platform.
