Professor Mitchell trained in Newcastle, Cambridge and Leeds. His research interests include the scientific approach to screening and clinical diagnosis, physical-mental comorbidity, health inequalities and all aspects of psycho-oncology. He has been widely acknowledged as improving the understanding of screening in mental health as well as increasing awareness of physical-mental comorbidity. His research methods include a combination of primary research, systematic review and meta-analysis. His clinical expertise includes depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, dementia and mild cognitive impairment. In 2004 he published the BMA award winning book “Neuropsychiatry & Behavioural Neurology Explained” (1/e) and in 2009 was co-editor of “Screening for Depression: An Evidence based Approach.” In 2009 he was awarded the Hiroomi Kawano New Investigator Award for best international researcher psycho-oncology.
