Dr. Alexandre Escolà Agustí is a Professor Agregat/Profesor Contratado Doctor (eqv. Associate Professor) at the School of Agrifood and Forestry Science and Engineering at the University of Lleida, located in Lleida, Catalonia, Spain. He has been lecturing courses on Precision Agriculture, agricultural machinery, spray application techniques and the use of ICT, computers and automation in agriculture. Dr. Escolà chaired the 9th European Conference on Precision Agriculture (ECPA) held in Lleida in July 7-11, 2013. From then on, he is member of the ECPA program committee. He is member of the International Society of Precision Agriculture (ISPA) since 2012, where he is the Spanish representative. He coordinated the process at ISPA to elaborate and official definition for Precision Agriculture (https://ispag.org/about/definition) and the official translations to Catalan, Spanish, Galician (galego) and Basque (euskera). In the past, he participated in the elaboration of technical standards related to agricultural machinery for ISO, CEN and AENOR and served as member of the editorials boards of the Spanish Journal of Agricultural Research (ISSN 2171-9292; 2020 JCR IF: 1.238) and the MDPI journal Sensors (ISSN 1424-8220; 2020 JCR IF: 3.576). Currently, he is serving in the editorial board of the Springer journal Precision Agriculture (ISSN 1385-2256; 2020 JCR IF: 5.767 in 2021). Recently, he has served as co-editor in the Springer book 'Sensing Approaches for Precision Agriculture' (ISBN: 978-3-030-78431-7) where he co-authored the first introductory chapter and the conclusions.
His background is both agronomy and agricultural engineering since in Spain the degree he earned is named “Agricultural Engineering” (1997) and the M.S. degree equivalent is named “Agronomy Engineering” (2001). Dr. Escolà conducted his Ph.D. research on variable rate spray application of plant protection products in orchards (2010), developing a patented variable rate spray sprayer using either ultrasonic or LiDAR sensors.
His current research activity is focused on developing Precision Agriculture tools such as the use of terrestrial LiDAR sensors and other techniques to create 3D models to characterize orchard canopies looking for variability, the delineation of zones within the orchards with similar values in order to ease the sampling, the electronic detection and classification of weeds (patented) and fruits, among other issues and crops.
