Albert Clapés

B.Sc. in Computer Science at Universitat de Barcelona in 2012 and M.Sc. in Artificial Intelligence at Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya in 2014, I obtained my Ph.D. in Engineering and Applied Sciences at Universitat de Barcelona in 2019. My thesis “Learning to recognize human actions: from hand-crated to deep-learning based visual representations”, which explored the visual multimodality for visual human-related analyses and how to handle the temporal information in action recognition problems, was awarded with the extraordinary prize of best Ph.D. thesis 2018/19 from Facultat de Matemàtiques i Informàtica. Since 2012, when I became a fellow member of the Human Pose recovery and Behavior Analysis (HuPBA) research group led by Dr. Sergio Escalera, I published 22 scientific articles (6 JCR articles, 15 proceedings on international conferences, and 1 book chapter), participated in 8 competitive research projects (3 international and 5 national ones) and 1 transference project, and advised 4 bachelor thesis. During my predoctoral years, I was partially financed by the FI-DGR (2015-2017) scholarship by Generalitat de Catalunya. In 2018, I spend 3-month doing my research stay at Aalborg University with Dr. Thomas B. Moeslund. I have also been an organizer of different workshops and challenges (ECCV2016, ICPR2016, and FG2020) in top-tier international conferences in collaboration with ChaLearn LAP and Microsoft Research. In 2020, I became a member of the European Lab for Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELLIS) and the Associació Catalana de Intel.ligència Artificial (ACIA). Today, I am co-principal investigator of the national competitive project “SENIOR” (founded by the Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades and European Regional Development Fund) and carry out my postdoctoral research tasks at Computer Vision Center from Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Moreover, I am currently advising 1 B.Sc., 1 M.Sc., and 1 Ph.D. thesis, while I teach Data Structures as a part-time professor at Universitat de Barcelona, whre I also taught Data Structures in 2019/20 and Programming II in 2015/2016 as a predoctoral fellow. My research interests comprise machine learning and computer vision and, more particularly, intelligent human-machine interfaces and their application to e-Health. I am looking forward to making these interfaces more human-like and sensitive to all sorts of human behavioral cues observed from sensors of multiple modalities (video, audio, etc.). My final goal is to contribute to the development of powerful intelligent tools to assist careers and improve impaired people and chronic patients their everyday life.
