Engineered nanomaterials, defined as 100 nm in diameter or less, and other ultrafine products are being manufactured and introduced into the market worldwide because of their exceptional physicochemical characteristics. In vitro toxicology studies with cell lines and in vivo studies with animals raise the possibility of adverse effects on the immune system, oxidative stress-related disorders, lung disease, and inflammation.
