个人简介
Alberto Tagliaferri, PhD, is Associate Professor of Physics at Physics Department of Politecnico di Milano, Italy since 2014. He teaches fundamental Physics (Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Electromagnetics) for the BSc in Engineering and Electron and Scanning Probe Microscopy for the Master degree in Engineering Physics at Politecnico di Milano. His research activity focus on the electronic, magnetic, and structural properties of advanced materials and nanostructures.
He is author of more than 90 papers in peer reviewed journals, with an H-index of 20 (Scopus ID 56800276800). He is tutor of undergraduate and PhD students in Physics. He managed a total research budget of about 1 MEuro during his scientific career. His scientific collaborations include different international groups in condensed matter physics (G. van der Laan’s (Europhysics prize 2000) group in Daresbury (UK), G. Ghiringhelli and L. Braicovich (Europhysics prize 2018), LETI-Minatec lab of CNRS, ESRF, and CEA in Grenoble, CNRS in Nancy, A. Fert’s (Nobel prize 2007) group at Thales in Paris, CEA in Saclay (FR), LUMES at EPFL Lausanne (CH))
He was member of the scientific committee of the CNISM (the Italian national university consortium for condensed matter physics), visiting scientist at ESRF (FR) and at CNST-IIT (IT).
Scientific activity
Prof. Alberto Tagliaferri graduated in Nuclear Engineering with a thesis on surface resonances in magnetic thin film materials investigated by Spin Resolved Inverse Photoemission Spectroscopy, in the group of Prof. Franco Ciccacci at Politecnico di Milano (1996). In 2000, he defended his PhD thesis in Physics on electronic Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (RIXS) in the soft X-ray regime, applied to the investigation of the electronic and magnetic dynamics of transition metals and rare earths compounds with high spin polarization and electron correlation, in the group of Prof. Lucio Braicovich. The activity was mostly based at European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Grenoble, France, where he afterward served as PostDoc scientist in 2000 and 2001 at the Soft X-ray dichroism beamline lead by Dr. Nick Brookes.
Since this time, his research follows two main streams: 1) the instrumentation and method development for electron spectroscopy and microscopy and 2) the investigation of magnetic and electronic properties advanced materials and nanostructures.
He contributed to the development of the AXES project (Advanced X-ray Emission Spectroscopy), leaded by L. Braicovich (Europhysics prize 2018 together with Prof. G. Ghiringhelli, for the development of soft X-ray RIXS). In this context, he was responsible of the Integrated Resonant Raman Scattering (IRRS) project, aimed at investigating the magnetic and electronic dynamics in ferrites by the observation of the circular polarization and angular dependence of soft X-ray scattering.
He investigated also the Heusler alloys and in thin films by a variety of soft X-ray electron spectroscopies (X-ray absorption with linear and circular dichroism, spin resolved X-ray photoemission and RIXS). In 2001 he moved to Politecnico di Milano, Department of Physics, as assistant professor, continuing the activity at ESRF as visiting scientist until 2010. From 2005, he leads the Electron Microscopy laboratory (EMlab) of the Department of Physics, studying the growth of SiGe artificial and self-assembled nanostructures, the surface and interface diffusion in materials for energy applications (photovoltaics, hydrogen production and nuclear fusion). Since 2012, he is visiting scientist at Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia, leading the collaboration between Politecnico di Milano, CNST-IIT and IFNCNR for the development of ultrafast electron spectromicroscopy, joining the spatial resolution of electron microscopes with the temporal resolution of pulsed lasers and aimed at the investigation of charge dynamics at surfaces of advanced materials and devices. An original ultrafast scanning electron microscope was developed with sub micrometer and picosecond resolutions. His research concentrates now on the dynamics of charge carrier transport, generation, and recombination and of the evolution of surface states population in high-speed electronics, sensor, light generation, and solar energy harvesting, where surfaces and interfaces of classical and topological insulator and advanced semiconductors play a major role.
Teaching activity
Alberto Tagliaferri is teaching fundamental Physics courses (Mechanics, Acoustics, Thermodynamics, and Electromagnetics) for Engineering at Politecnico di Milano since 2001.
Since 2009 he’s also teaching the Electron and Scanning probe Microscopies for the Master class in Engineering Physics.
He has been tutor of several undergraduate and PhD students in Physics. Four students concluded their PhD studies under his tutorship.
He is member of the Steering Committee of the Master course in Physics Engineering.
