I am a marine researcher with special interest in the fields of marine biotechnology, ecotoxicology and marine environmental science. During the course of my Environmental Engineering degree (2007-2012) I started to be interested in environmental toxicology, especially the negative effects of pollution on biodiversity. This interest was intensified during my Erasmus experience where I enrolled in a project in the field of soil remediation in Greenland. Following this first contact with the scientific domain, and my long-cherished interest in marine biology, the field of marine toxicology sprung up as a career prospect. Fact evidenced by the choice of my thesis subject where I join a research project (PTDC/SAU¿ESA/100107/2008), which addressed the impact of possible pollutants in marine organisms, especially marine invertebrates based on toxicological biomarkers (e.g. oxidative stress). After my degree, I start working in the field of marine biotechnology and began working with polychaetes, which intensified my interest for this field of research. Due to the novelty and exploratory nature of the work, I gain expertise in chromatography (HPLC), toxicity assays, proteomics, histological techniques and light (bright field and fluorescence) and electron microscopy. After a quick stop of biotechnology with a European project (2015) focused on open water Observatories, I began my PhD scholarship (2016-2021) to study the biotechnological value of biotoxins from a marine polychaete, that was framed with Greentech project (Of pigments and toxins: an integrative approach on the biotechnological deterrent of a marine polychaete). More specifically I gain expertise in field work, for the collections of target organisms in order to establish rearing and brooding systems in the laboratory, plus multidisciplinary laboratory work. I have been working in the physiology of the production of bioactive compounds, the chemical characterization of substances and the assessment of their potential as biocides, cytotoxic agents, anti-proliferative properties and other issues of upmost relevance for drug discovery and application in biomedical research. Throughout my academic career, I have mentored 4 bachelor students and 3 master students, have been awarded with a doctoral grant, 2 research fellowships and 2 awards for front cover image. I published 13 SCI research papers, 7 as first and corresponding author (plus a few papers in proceedings), 13 posters and 10 oral communications in both national and international scientific meetings (three as presenting author). I attained an H-index of 7 with over 100 citations.
