Career Trajectory
Bio
Dr Alexandros Lappas received a B.Sc. in Physics from the University of Crete (1988) and a D.Phil. in Chemical Physics from the School of Chemistry and Molecular Sciences at the Univ. of Sussex, UK (1993). During 1993-95 he was a Research Fellow in the Inorganic & Solid State Chemistry division of the Univ. of Sussex, while he was involved in the development of fullerene-based magnets and superconductors. After his compulsory military service (1996-97) in Greece, he moved back to Univ. of Sussex as a Visiting Lecturer (Inorganic & Physical Chemistry curriculum). Dr Lappas was elected at the Institute of Electronic Structure and Laser (IESL), Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH), as an Associated Researcher (December 1998) in Materials Science. He was promoted to Principal Researcher in 2002 and to Research Director in 2012. In parallel, he has taught undergraduate and postgraduate materials physics courses, as a Visiting Professor, at the Dept. of Materials Science & Technology, and recently at the Dept. of Physics, both in the Univ. of Crete. Dr Lappas established and leads the Quantum Materials & Magnetism Laboratory at IESL, an experimental activity dealt with quantum phenomena in functional materials.
Dr Lappas’s research entails the understanding of the structure-composition-property relations of strongly interacting complex oxides and chalcogenides in bulk and nanoscale forms. At present, he exploits coupled phenomena in solids, targeting application fields in nanomedicine (e.g. MRI, hyperthermia) and magnetoelectronics (e.g. multiferroics). Via strategic research collaborations, he seeks to understand current limitations of energy materials by studying their crystallographic structure and dynamics. His team has setup in-house, sophisticated sample environments, especially at low temperatures and high magnetic fields. A significant component of his work is complemented at large-scale European (ISIS-UK; PSI-Switzerland) and US (NIST, ORNL, NSLS-II) facilities of neutron, synchrotron X-ray and muon science. Under his coordination the lab has attracted more than 2 MEuro funding from Greek (GSRT, Ministry of Education) and European competitive sources (EC, NATO, ONRG). Dr A. Lappas has published more than 100 refereed journal articles, 8 referred articles in special volumes of conferences and has given invited lectures (25) and numerous contributed talks (47) at international conferences. His work has been cited over 1900 times (h-index= 26; ResearcherID: F-6771-2011).
