Bio
Dr Antje Hebestreit is head of the Unit Lifestyle-Related Disorders at the Leibniz Institute for Prevention Research and Epidemiology – BIPS in Bremen, Germany. Dr Hebestreit served as a nutritional epidemiologist and coordinator of the German branch of the largest pan-European intervention study on diet- and lifestyle-related disorders in children (www.ideficsstudy.eu; 2006-2012) and coordinated internationally the dietary assessment of the subsequent cohort study (I.Family, 2012-2017; https://www.ifamilystudy.eu). During the JPI-HDHL DEDIPAC project (2013-2016) she developed a roadmap towards a harmonized health surveillance in Europe; since 2018 she chairs Work Package 2 "Monitoring and surveillance" of the JPI-HDHL Policy Evaluation Network aiming at the establishment of such a harmonized surveillance system.
In 2021, she qualified as professor (venia legendi) for Public Health at the University Bremen. After her PhD in 2004, she worked as Postdoctoral Research Fellow for the Harvard University and as a consultant for the UN World Food Programme.
Dr. Hebestreit spent multiple years in Tanzania to conduct epidemiological research: From 2000-2001 she conducted the main part of the research for her PhD in the Kilimanjaro Region; research she continued between 2004-2007. From 2005-2006 she coordinated an RCT for the research collaboration of the Muhimbili University College of Health Sciences/ Harvard University in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Since 2012 she is PI of multiple NCD-related research projects in Zanzibar, Tanzania.
Over the years, her work has focused on determinants and health consequences of dietary behavior and dietary intake in European and Tanzanian populations, with a strong interest in underlying mechanisms and innovations in risk factor research.
