A. E. Botha

André E. Botha received the B.Sc. degree in physics and electronics, an Honour's degree in theoretical physics, and the master's degree in geophysics from Rhodes University, Grahamstown, South Africa, in 1994, 1996, and 1997, respectively. After the master's degree, he went abroad to study atomic physics with the University of Denver, Denver, CO, USA, where he received a second M.S. degree at the end of 1999. He received the Ph.D. degree in condensed matter physics from the University of Western Ontario, London, ON, Canada, in 2003. Since 2004, he has been a Lecturer and a Researcher with the University of South Africa, Pretoria, South Africa, where he is currently an Associate Professor. He has authored and co-authored more than 40 scientific publications. Dr. Botha was an Active Member on the organizing committee for the 56th annual conference of the South African Institute of Physics, in 2011. He was a Co-Editor of the proceedings for the same conference. Since 2004, he has given several invited talks, both locally and internationally. Most recently (October, 2016), he gave an invited talk to the Physics Department of the Vaal University of Technology, Johannesburg, South Africa. The title of this talk, “Detecting criticality and close-to-the-edge behavior in nonlinear systems of phase oscillators,” reflects some of his current research interest, which include the physics of nonlinear, chaos, and synchronization phenomena. He is also a member of the British and Canadian Institutes of Physics.
