个人简介
Throughout my career, my interest has been focused on the conservation of species and ecosystems. My research interests are based on the study of apex predators as ecological indicators and their environments through spatial distribution modelling, and the interactions with their prey, together with anthropogenic pressures from an ecosystemic point of view. Over the last 20 years, I have been monitoring migratory bird populations (land and sea). In parallel, I have acquired statistical skills for the analysis of ecological processes related to species distribution. I have co-supervised 6 (3 more in process) Master’s thesis. I have worked and participated in different competitive public research projects in the coastal strip and marine environment, as well as in particular environments such as artisanal salt marshes and fisheries sector, studying their biodiversity and sustainability. As a result, I am author/co-author of 32 publications (13 JCR, 7 of them as 1st, 2nd or last author) and 3 book chapters, as well as more than ten publications for a general public (i.e. non-JCR journals). I act as a reviewer for international journals (Animal Movement, PLOS ONE, Ardeola and Frontiers in Marine Science). I have presented my research results in 9 national/international conferences), and I have actively worked in 12 research projects funded in competitive calls. I am actively working on the preparation of new research projects and seeking funding to continue my research on the ecological relationships of top predators under the current scenario of global change. I am also in continuous contact with researchers from other universities and other countries. This activity reflects my good aptitude to continue advancing knowledge, which is crucial for a scientific career.
Prior to the completion of my PhD, I carried out 3 international internship. The first one was at Hawk Mountain Sanctuary (USA). During four months, I studied different aspects of the ecology and conservation of birds of prey. The second internship (within my PhD programme) was in Djibouti and Ethiopia, where I studied for two months the ecology of scavenging raptors under the tutelage of the University of Utah (USA) and HawkWatch International. As a result, I co-authored 2 scientific publications with relevance to the ornithological importance of not accessible and poorly studied areas of the Horn of Africa (Buechley et al., 2019; Murgatroyd et al., 2021). In 2020, I spent two months at the University Tras os Montes e Alto Douro (Vila Real, Portugal), where I focused my research on the study of threatened seabird species in Marine Protected Areas. As a result, we achieved a relevant scientific publication, where we propose novel management measures to ensure the survival of the population of the threatened Eurasian Shag Gulosus aristotelis in Portugal (De la Cruz et al., 2022a).
My publications are having a high impact within the scientific community. In particular the results of my research (Arroyo et al., 2020; De la Cruz et al., 2021a, 2022a, 2022c) offer fundamental results that will be used to update the Natura 2000 Network to protect the key area of a critically endangered species, Balearic Shearwater Puffinus mauretanicus (our proposal has been considered by the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge for the next update of the Marine Protected Areas). Moreover, our research on threatened auks species (Arcos et al., 2021c, 2021d) has been published in the Spanish Red Book of Birds which is a national conservation reference.
I have obtained 5 awards such as collaboration in the Department of Animal Physiology at the University of Seville, International Mention in my PhD programme, best oral presentation at the Conserbio Congress (2019), photography prize at the Central Research Services of the University of Cadiz (2020) and Extraordinary Doctorate Award during the 20/21 course in the Science Branch in the Doctoral Program in Management and Conservation of the Sea by University of Cadiz (2022).
In 2022, I obtained a 2 years competitive postdoctoral international grant 'Margarita Salas' from the University of Cádiz to develop research on marine top predators through an international stay at the University of Coimbra (Portugal) together with the ECOTOP research team, world leader in the study of this marine group.
Finally, I have acquired teaching experience related to bird ecology. I have taken official courses to improve my teaching skills and I have taught in the Master's Degree in Management and Conservation of the Natural Environment and in the Aula de Mayores of the University of Cadiz, in the National University of Distance Education (UNED) and in public administrations, as well as in numerous non-formal education courses/workshops.
