Walid Y. Ali-Ahmad (S'90–M'90–SM'03) received the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from The University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, in 1990 and 1993, respectively.
Since October 2006, he has been a Senior Consultant with the RF Division, Mediatek Singapore, Singapore, where his main focus is on architecture design and system development of RFICs for mobile applications. From September 2004 to September 2007, he was an Associate Professor of electrical engineering with the American University of Beirut, where his research concerned the areas of RF microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), multiband multimode cellular and data radio systems, and millimeter-wave wireless personal area networks (WPANs). From June 1997 to September 2004, he was a Principal Member of Technical Staff with the Wireless Communications Division, Maxim Integrated Products, Sunnyvale, CA. He was the first to architect and system design direct-conversion radios for broadband CDMA wireless local loop systems and for WCDMA cellular handsets. His system-level design work on WCDMA direct-conversion receivers resulted in a very low-cost, small-size, and very low-power RF chipset for third generation (3G) cellular mobile stations. He was heavily involved in radio system reference designs for 3G WCDMA and TD-SCDMA handsets. From 1996 to 1997, he was with Cadence Design Systems, where he was a key contributor to the development of the RFIC system design methodology used in current computer-aided design (CAD) tools for co-simulation of RF communication circuits and systems in one design environment. From 1994 to 1996, he was also with the Anritsu Company, where his work with microwave components and system design at Anritsu-Wiltron led to the development of high-dynamic range wideband receivers for mixed-signal automatic test equipment (ATE). He has authored or coauthored over 35 publications in conferences, journals, and technical magazines.
Dr. Ali-Ahmad has given several talks at different IEEE workshops in the area of direct conversion receivers design and RF MEMS development. He was the recipient of the Best Paper Award presented at the Agilent 2001 RF Semiconductor Executive Conference. He was also the recipient of a conference paper award in the area of millimeter-wave receiver design.
