Reinhard Boehler, former Director of the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry in Mainz, Germany, joins the Geophysical Laboratory as a senior scientist and will work on a wide range of problems in the field of high-pressure science and technology, particularly those related to major energy challenges. Prior to joining Carnegie, Rainey was head of the High Pressure Group at the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry and is currently president of the International Society for the Advancement of High Pressure Science and Technology (AIRAPT). He has received numerous awards, including the Louis Neel Medal from EGS in 1997. His research interests focus on the thermal properties of materials under extremely high pressures, adiabatic gradients, and the thermal expansion rates of simple metals and mantle and core materials. He made the first direct high-pressure measurements at temperatures above 4000 K, as well as the first melting experiments on iron under core conditions, and developed a model of the thermal expansion rate of the Earth's interior. Rainey has also developed a number of high-pressure technologies, including laser heating methods and new diamond anvil chambers that are now in use around the world.
