Dr. Mikko Hallman is currently professor and chief investigator of neonatal-perinatal research program in PEDEGO Research Center, and Medical Research Center Oulu, University of Oulu, and senior consultant in Department of Pediatrics, Oulu University Hospital. He chairs the Finnish neonatal/perinatal network, currently focusing in genomic medicine. Dr. Hallman graduated from medical school, defended his PhD Thesis and started his residency in pediatrics in Helsinki during years 1970-2. Neonatology training and research with famous Louis Gluck started in San Diego 1973 and for years Hallman intermittently associated with his unit. The positions of Dr. Hallman have ranged from research director, chief of neonatal medicine to professor and chairman and involved four Medical Schools: UC San Diego, UC Irvine; University of Helsinki and University of Oulu, Finland. Dr. Hallman has served as research mentor of 25 US and international fellows. Since 1992 he has been principal supervisor of 25 completed PhD thesis projects. New students are in the pipeline while several of the former students are currently professors. He is a recipient of a number of national and international awards; among them NIH Fogarty Fellowship, AAP Young Investigator Award, International Arvo Ylppö Award, European Excellence of Neonatology- and European Maternity Prices.
Dr. Hallman is the author of some 400 original articles, reviews or book chapters. The journals include NEJM, Lancet, J Clin Invest, Am J Hum Gen and Am J Resp Crit Care Med. The principal aim is to understand the process of differentiation and to use that understanding to develop treatment or prevention of life-threatening and damaging morbidities. A good example from the past is the surfactant story: in 1970:ies Hallman described the minor surfactant lipids and isolated surfactant from amniotic fluid. In 1980:ies the US-Finnish team led by Hallman reported the first RCT on natural surfactant therapy. The following RCTs and basic research on human surfactant paved the way to surfactant therapy and to synthetic surfactants. In 1989, Hallman-team started a new long-term project investigating the mystery of spontaneous preterm birth. Lately this project has become the main focus.
