Dr. May Chan obtained her medical degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo and was a Howard Hughes Research Scholar in 2005-2006. She completed residency training in Anatomic Pathology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, followed by a Dermatopathology fellowship at Harvard. She joined the University of Michigan as a faculty in 2011 and is now an Associate Professor of Pathology and Dermatology. She is the Medical Director of Immunohistochemistry Laboratory, and the Program Director of Dermatopathology Fellowship.
Dr. Chan serves on the editorial boards of Modern Pathology and the Journal of Cutaneous Pathology. Her research interests mainly lie in the areas of inflammatory skin diseases, melanocytic neoplasms, and immunohistochemistry. She is the author/co-author of over 70 peer-reviewed publications and the book, "Handbook of Direct Immunofluorescence: A Pattern-based Approach to Skin and Mucosal Biopsies".
Dr. Chan is board certified in Anatomic Pathology and Dermatopathology. In addition to her primary role as a dermatopathologist, Dr. Chan retains her interest in surgical pathology including interpretation of intraoperative frozen sections. Over the years she has been invited to speak at national and international meetings hosted by the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology (USCAP), the American Society of Dermatopathology (ASDP), the College of American Pathologists (CAP), the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), the European Nail Society, and Dermpedia.
