Ilias Goranitis is an Associate Professor within the Centre for Health Policy at the University of Melbourne and leads the health economics of Australian Genomics. His main applied and methodological work focuses on exploring the value and cost-effectiveness of genomic technologies using health economic and discrete choice modelling. A/Prof Goranitis has been a successful co-applicant in research grants nationally (MRFF, NHMRC and the Department of Health) and internationally (UK NIHR, the UK Department of Health, and the Gates Foundation) worth over $50 million.
His work has been published in in top-tier journals including the New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet Global Health, Genetics in Medicine, Value in Health, European Journal of Human Genetics, NIHR Health Technology Assessment, Medical Decision Making, JAMA Oncology and PharmacoEconomics. His work has also influenced NICE, WHO, RCOG guidelines and has appeared in many newspapers and media platforms including the CNN, BBC, The Times, Independent, and Genomeweb. A/Prof Goranitis was an author of the white paper led by the World Economic Forum titled ‘Global Data Access for Solving Rare Disease: A Health Economics Value Framework’ and has provided advice on the prioritisation of genomics and genomics research at a national level. He is a Founding and Lead Convener of the Economics of Genomics & Precision Medicine (Econ-Omics) special interest group within the international Health Economics Association.
A/Prof Goranitis has significant experience in teaching and leading the delivery of health economics related subjects to undergraduate economics and postgraduate health economics and public health students. He coordinated the Economic Evaluation II course for the Masters in Public health, and he is also one of the University of Melbourne Health Economics Group coordinators. A/Prof Goranitis holds honorary appointments with the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute and the University of Birmingham in the UK, and he is an alumnus of the London School of Economics and University of Athens.
