My research is in the new field of "Laboratory Plasma Astrophysics", which aims at reproducing different astrophysical objects in the laboratory through carefully scaled experiments. The experiments consists on handling plasmas, a 'soup' of free electrons and ions which can be manipulated by electrics and magnetic fields. Plasmas are everywhere, particularly in space, and many of the astrophysical objects are in some manner made of plasma.
To produce plasmas in the laboratory, I perform experiments with very strong electrical currents (of approx. 1,000,0000 Amperes) which are introduced into targets. Most of the experiments are performed on MAGPIE (Mega Ampere Generator for Plasma Implosion Experiments) at Imperial College London.
I also perform experiments using extremely intense lasers, with powers of the order of 10^14 Watt/cm^2, to generate dense and highly supersonic plasmas that can also be scaled to astrophysical objects.
