Filipe Ferreira was awarded a PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering by University of Coimbra, in 2014, for his work on high-capacity optical transmission over multi-path fibres aiming at exceeding the limits of conventional single-path fibres. During this time, he worked as a research engineer at Nokia Siemens Networks leading several research advances under the EU-FP7 project MODEGAP, including novel fibres, the first semi-analytical nonlinear transmission simulator and advanced system designs.
He was then awarded a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship to continue his research at Aston University. During this period, he advanced the understanding of the interplay between linear and nonlinear fibre impairments and its impact on the achievable transmission capacity, and, developed the first high-speed spatial modulator encoding information directly onto the path index.
In 2019, Filipe joined the EPSRC TRANSNET programme at University College London to develop intelligent transceivers aiming at better approaching the Shannon limit by adapting to the characteristics of the transmission link.
