Research Focus
I have been actively engaged in research on adult-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSC). We have developed canine, feline and equine models to assess MSC safety and efficacy. My current research expertise is in MSC biology and immunomodulation. We have begun to define the mechanisms by which MSC alter the immune response and interact with cells of the immune system. Our most significant contribution is in the use of naturally occurring large animal models of disease to study cell therapy for inflammatory diseases. Specifically we are focused on naturally occurring inflammatory bowel disease in dogs, chronic gingivostomatitis in cats and spinal cord injury in dogs. With our canine work, we have focused on how MSCs interact with microbes important to GI health.
