The diagnosis and early intervention of a first episode psychosis is directly related to its prognosis. It is the initial phase of a psychotic disorder, which is a severe mental illness characterized by delusions, hallucinations and/or disorganized behaviour or speech. Commonly, the first assistance to these patients are done by a non-psychiatrist in an emergency or primary care setting. The practitioners must be able to identify and properly manage this condition, without delaying the diagnosis, screening and initiation of the proper treatment.
