A Phase-to-phase Protection Algorithm with the Transient Information for the Wind Power Plant Transmission Line

Protective relays can mal-operate for transmission lines connected to power converter based large capacity wind farms (WFs), due to the fault characteristics of wind power converter. A phase-to-phase fault protection method with single-end transient information for wind farm transmission lines is proposed in this article. The suggested method employs the time domain differential equations with the transmission line equivalent resistance, inductance, and fault path resistance to solve the fault location. The effectiveness of the scheme is evaluated with the Real-Time Lab(RTLAB). The impact of factors is considered, such as the fault resistances, locations, distributed capacitance. The results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm has the characteristics of high speed and high reliability.
